Oropouche River:
Located east of Valencia, flows the North Oropouche River, one of the most spectacular watercourses in the Northern Range.
It is said that source originates from the limestone region of Aripo, cascading down the hills it submerges underground to resurface at the cave in Cumaca.
The rocks that line the riverbed, are deposits of limestone or calcium carbonate.
These rocks tend to be less slippery to walk on and help filter the water, leaving it crystal clear.
The river flow down to the more popular liming spot at the Valencia Bridge.
But the beauty of the river is located upstream deep in the Forrest with numerous pools and gorges.
Trail:
The journey to the Upper North Oropouche begins about two kilometers east of the Valencia River.
If you are heading east there is a dirt road (not named) on the left of the road on the corner before the quarry, this road leads into the Forrest.
This area is used by hunters and loggers, so portions of the road are terrible, but its not a problem if you are in a 4×4 vehicle.
Relative to where you park the journey may be as long as five kilometers and would take approximately one and a half hours.
The terrain is mostly flat with mild inclines leading into the Forrest, and then it descends to the river.
The River:
The river is mostly shallow with the exceptions of the pools at particular spots.
On reaching the river you then proceed upstream, there is an amazing pool on the corner.
This pool is also great for bathing and relaxing, but it is very deep and has a lot of current pushing downstream.
About five minutes past this pool upstream there is a limestone plateau with brilliant pools with crystal clear waters below.
This spot is ideal for hanging out, and taking a rest after the trek in.
You can also walk further up the river where you would find and old dam, currently not in use anymore.
I great hike to cool off and wash away the troubles on a free weekend.
This river is absolute amazing, and I would advise everyone to keep it clean.
