Located upstream from the Mermaid Basins (better known as Mermaid Pools) in the heart of the Matura Forest is the captivating Manulot Falls.
Resembling the formation of the more popular Turure Water Steps, this falls is remarkably beautiful, as the tributary flows out over a smooth cascading limestone steps into the main river.
The flowing of water on the cascaded smooth limestone resembles that of a curtain and situated beneath its overhang there is an underwater chamber (cave).
Below the falls resides a plunge pool formed by the kinetic energy of the two rivers about seven feet in depth, deep enough for jumping not diving.
The tributaries that contribute to the Matura River originate from the sandstone regions of Cumaca, and Aripo and along its bed are deposits of layers of sedimentary rock.
Manulot Trek
The trek to Manuelot Falls starts from Thomas Trace located just before Matura outreach center, the same road as if you are heading to Mermaid Pool.
One and a half-hour walk from an old farmers dirt road on undulating terrain ( gradual up and down ) through a timeless pine forest until we meet the Matura river.
Following this rocky river upstream against the current for one and a half hour, through a number of gorgeous pool will take you to a truly magnificence sight of crystal clear waters upon an amazing limestone formation.
The water of the river is absolutely amazing and clean, with emerald green pools and steady flow, you are able to see straight to the bottom of a seven-plus feet pool.
It’s easier to walk on the rocks in the water, as the exposed rocks tend to be very slippery, and the possibility of injury is high.
The river and falls is very scenic, the water however is very cold, but there is some nice areas for taking photos, and enjoying a relaxing soak or splash.
